Colgate Clock
1401 S. Clark. Blvd.
Clarksville, IN 47129
United States
The Colgate clock overlooks the Ohio River and is visible from the Louisville side of the river day or night. It sits atop the old Colgate – Palmolive plant, which closed in 2007. The building functioned as a prison until 1922. Colgate reopened the building as a soap factory in 1923. The single face Colgate clock was built in 1908 and stood for 16 years atop the Colgate plant in Jersey City, N.J. At that time it was the world’s largest time piece, measuring forty feet in diameter, with hands 15 and 21 ½ feet in length. The clock was moved to the Indiana location in 1924. The single face 51 feet diameter replacement clock now sits on the old Colgate Company grounds in Jersey City, N.J. at Battery Park.
Clock: Designed by a Colgate engineer and built by Seth Thomas in 1906
