The present church was founded in 1853-54 to accommodate German Catholic immigrants. The anti-Catholic riots near the church on August 6, 1855, an election day, gave rise to the name “Bloody Monday”. At least 22 persons were killed and scores more injured, not to mention the extensive damage done to the church itself. The trouble started with the attempt by a nativist mob to block German and Irish Catholics from voting.
